The veins bring blood from the rest of the body parts to the heart. There are three types of veins present in the legs: (i) the superficial veins lying just under the skin, (ii) the deep veins present deep in the leg between the muscles (iii) the perforating veins that connect the superficial and deep veins. Deep veins join vena cava which is the body’s largest vein. It reaches the heart with deoxygenated blood.

Deep venous thrombosis (DVT) is a condition which arises due to thrombosis/clotting in the deep veins. Generally, the veins present in the pelvis, calf or thigh or calf result in this condition. On the other hand, thrombosis occurring in superficial veins leads to superficial thrombophlebitis and generally arises as a complication of varicose veins.

It can cause pulmonary thromboembolism so it is a serious concern and should not be ignored. This condition develops when a clot breaks and travels from deep veins to heart or lungs via bloodstream. Pulmonary thromboembolism is a medical emergency and may become life-threatening if not treated timely..

Around 50% DVT patients do not have symptoms. The appearance of symptoms depends upon the location & size of the blood clot. Swelling, pain in the leg, which worsens on standing or walking, sensation of warmth and cyanosis (bluish discolouration of skin) are the most common symptoms.

If you find any such symptoms, come to Hyderabad Vascular Center for the most effective deep vein thrombosis treatment in Hyderabad.

A D-Dimers blood test can be helpful. Its negative values indicate your low susceptibility to DVT.

These days, the diagnosis is done using duplex ultrasonography of leg veins. This investigation gives highly accurate results. The vascular ultrasound scanning is also done to establish the diagnosis.

Venography is the best investigation to confirm or rule out clot presence in the calf veins. But it is rarely performed these days.

More tests may be advised to investigate the cause, once the diagnosis has been established.

Serving the best deep vein thrombosis treatment in Hyderabad, Hyderabad Vascular Center provides all the investigation facilities to the patient at one place.

Old age (over 40 years) and obesity can be the prime cause behind DVT .

These three factors are responsible for development of DVT: (i) blood stagnating conditions in the deep veins, (ii) thick or sticky blood consistency (generally occurring in hypercoagulable states) and (iii) following a trauma or injury to the internal lining of the vein.

Such conditions are:

  • Long immobilization like in a hospital stay, a long travel
  • History of DVT, family history of DVT
  • Thrombophilia
  • Prevailing malignancy (cancer) or history of malignancy
  • operation/trauma, especially of knees, hips, abdomen or chest
  • myocardial infarction, congestive heart failure, stroke, inflammatory bowel disease

Risk increases in women who:

  • take oestrogens, contraceptive pills or undergo hormone replacement therapy
  • are in pregnancy or puerperium

The prime orientation of treatment is to prevent

  • Fatality associated with pulmonary thromboembolism
  • Recurrence
  • Post-thrombotic syndrome

Anticoagulants like Heparin and Warfarin can help to achieve these goals. Heparin is administered initially via subcutaneous injections for 5-7 days and then the right decision out of following is made:

  • Continuing injection therapy for months
  • Or replacement of this therapy with Warfarin tablets administration

New anticoagulants have emerged recently like Rivaroxaban (Xarelto) has been licensed for the treating DVT and preventing its recurrence in the United Kingdom (www.nice.org.uk/TA261) since 2012, and recently in Greece. It is administered orally and routine anticoagulant monitoring is not required for it. But it has a higher price than Warfarin.

Thrombolytic agents are drugs which are directly injected into the clot using a fine catheter which can dissolve larger clots also. However, the risk associated with bleeding (especially in the brain) is more than the anticoagulants. For safe DVT thrombolysis  in the lower limb, a temporary filter is inserted  in the inferior vena cava prior to the process.

Surgical intervention of vein clot is rarely done these days except in very serious cases of DVT, where the leg vitality and viability is under threat.

Use of a graduated compression stocking following an episode of DVT is highly recommended.

Generally the risk of post-thrombotic syndrome is lessened if anticoagulation usage is begun early after an episode of DVT and compression stocking are properly used for a period of minimum two years.

Your vascular surgeon may advise you on the type of stocking which can serve you the best and its directions of  usage.

Avoid standing for long periods or having a sedentary life. If you need to remain seated then keep stretching your legs properly from time to time. Keep moving your feet up and down. Prefer standing to interrupt continuing sitting posture.

If you plan to go for surgery – Appropriate measures should be adopted for prophylaxis should be followed as per your surgeon’s directions. These may include anti thromboembolism stockings, anticoagulation, early ambulation etc.

Avoid wearing tight clothes during traveling. Move your feet up and down, stretch your legs and go for a walk periodically. Stay hydrated and drink lots of water. Avoid alcohol and smoking. If you are at high risk of developing DVT, consult your doctor to use compression stockings while traveling or having Heparin injections.
